Why Monroe Charter Academy?

We believe children may not be products of our environments as much as they are products of our expectations. Academic excellence, along with the development of the child’s character and life skills, will be our blended and uncompromising objectives. We will teach children classically, in the natural ways they want to learn, but with rigor. Our educators will maintain a purposeful cognizance of our academic goals and will deliver the education with undisguised love of their vocations and our children.

Monroe Charter Academy is a new K-5 charter school located in Monroe, North Carolina serving the children of Union and surrounding counties. The Academy is managed by a board of directors and authorized by the NC State Board of Education. We are a free public school, open to all NC students, offering a classical style of education, a rigorous curriculum, and a focus on citizenship development.

Our Curriculum

MCA is A Classical Academy that cultivates culture and wisdom in our students. We focus on Focusing on Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric to help students become life long learners. We teach our k-5 students using Core Knowledge, Saxon Math and Shurley English.

For the 2021-2022 Academic Year, we will be offering three styles of instruction, with options for every family:

    • Full in-classroom instruction
    • Hybrid Instruction
    • Full Virtual Instruction

Core Knowledge is a curriculum, a systematic syllabus of topics to be studied by students that include topics and subtopics in language arts, world history, American history, geography, visual arts, music, mathematics, and science. Core Knowledge balances the description of academic skills with a prescription for subject-content knowledge. The curriculum is designed to give educators a way of knowing what students have experienced in school and to give students a common foundation on which to build additional learning.

A classical education model is built on the trivium: grammar, logic, and rhetoric. The first stage of the trivium is grammar, which focuses on teaching the mechanics of language to the student. Core Knowledge provides the strong foundation needed for students to grasp the mechanics of language. Click here to learn more about Core Knowledge.

Saxon Math is a teaching method for incremental learning of mathematics. It involves teaching a new mathematical concept every day and constantly reviewing old concepts. This spiraled approach allows students to constantly build a bank of knowledge through their elementary years.

The unique features of Shurley English give students the concrete steps necessary to relate the following:

    • a definition to a concept.
    • a concept to a skill practice.
    • a skill practice to writing.
    • writing to effective speaking.

Competent writing begins with understanding correct sentence structure, expands to paragraphs, and results in the enjoyment and satisfaction of well-written essays, reports, and letters. Shurley English provides this and will act to support Core Knowledge.
